Hydronoir (2017) reimagines Toni Morrison’s Beloved, through the lens of Yemaya and Olokun, the two Orisas (Yoruba deities) of the ocean during the Middle Passage. An exploration into the heartbreak experienced by a mother whose children are stolen from her, Hydronoir positions the Mother as an omnipresent aspect of God. In Yoruba tradition the journey to Orun (Heaven) begins with the physical body’s return to earth. Many stolen people committed themselves to the Ocean, and trusted it as their least painful destination towards light and salvation.
